Act,— act in the living Present!
활동하라, 살아있는 현재에 활동하라!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!
안에는 용기가 있고, 위에는 하나님이 계신다!
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

We can make our lives sublime,

슬픈 노래로 내게 말하지 말라,
인생은 헛된 꿈에 불과하다고!
잠든 영혼은 죽은 것이니,
사물은 보이는 대로가 아니다.
인생은 진실하다! 인생은 진지하다!
무덤이 그 목표는 아니니,
“너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가리라”는
영혼을 두고 한 말이 아니었다.
즐거움도, 슬픔도
우리가 향할 목적지나 길은 아니니,
다만 행동하는 것, 그리하여 매일의 내일이
오늘보다 더 나아가 있게 하는 것.
예술은 길고, 시간은 빠르게 흐르며,
우리의 마음은 굳세고 용감할지라도,
여전히, 소리 죽인 북처럼 울리며
무덤을 향한 장송곡을 두드린다.
세상이라는 넓은 전쟁터에서,
인생이라는 야영지에서,
말없이 이끌려가는 소 떼처럼 되지 말라!
싸움 속의 영웅이 되라!
아무리 즐거워도 미래를 믿지 말라!
죽은 과거는 그 죽음을 스스로 묻게 하라!
행동하라,— 살아있는 현재 속에서 행동하라!
가슴엔 마음을, 머리 위엔 신을 두고!
위대한 사람들의 삶은 우리에게 일깨워준다
우리도 숭고한 삶을 살 수 있음을,
그리고 떠나가며, 우리 뒤에 남길 수 있음을
시간의 모래밭 위 발자국을.
그 발자국을, 어쩌면 또 다른 이가,
인생이라는 장엄한 바다를 항해하다,
쓸쓸히 난파당한 한 형제가,
보고서, 다시 용기를 낼지도 모른다.
그러니 우리, 일어나 행하자,
어떤 운명 앞에서도 굳은 마음으로;
끊임없이 이루어가며, 끊임없이 추구하며,
일하는 법과 기다리는 법을 배우자.
